Veteran captain Thamsanqa Mkhize continues to defy his advancing years and was on Saturday named man of the match for Cape Town City as they overcame Sekhukhune United in their MTN8 quarterfinal.

The 1-0 away success in Polokwane came courtesy of a late penalty converted by Darwin Gonzalez, and sees City into the semifinal after last season failing to win any of their cup matches across three different competitions.

Mkhize, who turns 36 next week, is not thinking about any end to his career, as he told SuperSport.com

“I’m thinking one step at a time. So for me, I'm just focusing on this season. If I can achieve all the goals that I’ve set myself this season, maybe by the end of this season, I might think of calling it quits,” said Mkhize.

“But at the moment, I’m fully focused on the cause of the club. And I have to make sure that we meet our standards and we meet our goals.”

Mkhize said he was very optimistic about the season for City, with whom he won the Telkom Knockout in 2016 and the MTN8 in 2018.

“I'm very optimistic for us this season, especially considering the chairman has brought in a lot of experience. That will also help because if you can remember last season, we had a lot of very good young players. So for them to have this experience that we have among the team now, I think will elevate us to greater heights,” the flying left back added.
