Mamelodi Sundowns set another Premier Soccer League record on Wednesday when they beat Marumo Gallants 2-0 in the Betway Premiership at Loftus Versfeld, stretching to 31 their unbeaten run at home in league action.
Sundowns have not lost a home league game since their last fixture of the 2023-24 campaign to Cape Town City, more than two years ago.
That defeat also denied them becoming the first side to go unbeaten through an entire league seasons.
Sundowns’ run of unbeaten home games includes their 2-1 victory over Royal AM in October 2024, later removed from the points tally when the KwaZulu-Natal based club were kicked out of the league
Sundowns’ last home league match in May, at the end of the last campaign, proved another record breaker as they beat Siwelele 7-4 for the league match with the most goals in the PSL era.
Before Wednesday, Sundowns shared the record of 30 with Kaizer Chiefs, who started their 30-match unbeaten home league stretch in November 2003 and only lost it when they were beaten 4-2 at home two seasons later by Silver Stars.
Chiefs had a run of 29 unbeaten home league games until April 2014. When Sundowns lost at home to Cape Town City in May 2024, it ended their run of 28 unbeaten home league matches.
