As a club putting up one of the strongest challenges to Mamelodi Sundowns for the South African league title in recent memory, Orlando Pirates will hope to continue their winning momentum when they take on Siwelele in the Betway Premiership at the Orlando Amstel Area on Saturday.
Kick-off is at 3:30pm (CAT, GMT+2)
CURRENT FORM
Boosted by their 2-0 victory over Richards Bay on Wednesday evening, Pirates will head into their next game sitting in pole position in the league with 47 points after 20 games played.
So far, it’s been neck and neck between Pirates and Sundowns this season, with the latter sharing the same number of points and matches, separated only by a marginal goal difference tally (+1).
The Soweto giants have now recorded four wins and one defeat in their last five matches; their most recent loss was a 2-1 result against reigning league champions Sundowns on 18 February.
Along with their impressive run in the league, Pirates have scored the most goals (38) while conceding the fewest (8) in the league.
Siwelele on the other hand, faces a contrasting prospect as they currently occupy 11th place with 22 points from 19 matches.
However, Siwelele are just four points above the relegation zone, and their stuttering form could become a cause for concern. The Bloemfontein side noted four draws and just one victory in their previous handful of league games; the most recent result was a 0-0 stalemate against Stellenbosch FC.
WHAT WAS SAID
Speaking after his side’s most recent league win, Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou lauded the Sea Robbers' resilient attitude this season, shown by their desire to gain crucial points amid below par performances.
“I am really happy with the character of the team,” the Bucs mentor uttered.
“Even when it’s tough, as you can see that even on days like today [on Wednesday] the team is still winning, so you can imagine what would happen when we are in the best of shape — you can imagine how the team can perform.
“You will see this team will fly when we get to our best shape.”
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Orlando Pirates: Oswin Appollis – As perhaps one of the best midfielders in the PSL at the moment, Appollis will head into the next match with his confidence through the roof following a Man of the Match performance against Richards Bay.
Siwelele: Grant Margeman – In facing a superior midfield department, Margeman’s experience will be vital at stopping any kind of rhythm in the middle of the park. While midfield is Margerman’s domain, the former Sundowns man does carry a goal threat in his bag.
