Kaizer Chiefs vs Mamelodi Sundowns – last 10 meetings

Kaizer Chiefs will host Mamelodi Sundowns in the DStv Premiership on Saturday, aiming to stop the Tshwane giants from recording a new Premier Soccer League record of 12 victories in a row.
The AmaKhosi are a team who have troubled Sundowns in the recent past and have a point to prove themselves as they hope to avoid a third straight defeat.
The odds may be stacked in The Brazilians’ favour, but Chiefs won’t go down without a fight as we look back at the last 10 meetings between the sides.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 1-1 KAIZER CHIEFS
League – August 4, 2018
Giovanni Solinas’ Chiefs sprang into action in this season opener with an early goal from Rama Mphahlele but were pegged back midway through the second half when Ricardo Nascimento equalised from the penalty-spot after Daniel Cardoso fouled Jeremy Brockie. The latter also hit the crossbar but in keeping with his luck in a Sundowns shirt, the shot stayed out.
KAIZER CHIEFS 1-2 MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
League – January 5, 2019
The first game of the New Year in the 2018/19 season and for the second time in the campaign it was an entertaining tussle. Anthony Laffor had Sundowns ahead early, but the unlikely figure of Willard Katsande equalised for the home side. That was the way it stayed until the final 10 minutes when Lebo Maboe popped up with the winner for The Brazilians.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 0-2 KAIZER CHIEFS
League – October 28, 2019
Almost the complete performance from Chiefs as they bossed things with a tactical masterclass from Ernst Middendorp. Samir Nurkovic got both goals, one early and one late, and the AmaKhosi fairly cruised to the win in the end. Sundowns would have the last laugh though, pipping them to the title on the final day of the season.

League – August 27, 2020
A match played in the Gauteng bio-bubble as Chiefs were temporary residents at the Orlando Stadium, home of their bitter rivals Orlando Pirates. There was a hollow atmosphere with no fans in the stadium, but Gaston Sirino scored the only goal in the first half. This proved a crucial result in getting Sundowns in position to win the title.
KAIZER CHIEFS 0-3 MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
League – October 24, 2020
Another early season clash as the 2020/21 season kicked off later in the year and it was as comprehensive a Sundowns win as you will see against Gavin Hunt’s struggling Chiefs. Peter Shalulile got the ball rolling in the first half, before Kermit Erasmus added a second after the break and Themba Zwane supplied the cherry on top from the penalty-spot. One of the more one-sided contests in recent times.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 1-2 KAIZER CHIEFS
League – April 25, 2021
The only game that Sundowns lost in the league in the 2020/21 season was this one and it was all down to a mad few minutes in the second half when they lost concentration. Sirino had given them the lead and they looked comfortable until an own goal from Mosa Lebusa brought Chiefs back into it. Sundowns looked rattled by that and minutes later were stung by a counterattack that was finished off by the pacy Dumisani Zuma, a rare highlight for him in a Chiefs shirt. Sundowns strolled to the title but lost their ‘Invincibles’ tag because of this result.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 2-2 KAIZER CHIEFS
MTN8 – August 15, 2021
A MTN8 quarterfinal that was the first game of the season for both sides and it was a highly-entertaining contest. Shalulile put Sundowns ahead early and when Zwane scored a second midway through the first half, that looked like game over already. But Bernard Parker pulled a goal back before halftime and Khama Billiat scored against his former side to take the match to extra-time and eventually penalties. Chiefs could only score one of their five spot-kicks and lost 2-1 in the shoot-out.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 2-0 KAIZER CHIEFS
League – September 12, 2021
A few weeks later and the teams were back in action, this time in the league, and it was a much more comfortable afternoon for Sundowns. They took the lead early through the unlikely figure of Grant Kekana, before Shalulile added a second midway through the second period. To make matters worse for Chiefs, Lebo Manyama missed a penalty that could have given them a chance of getting back into the game.
KAIZER CHIEFS 1-1 MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
League – May 8, 2022
Chiefs blew their chance to win this one when Keagan Dolly missed another late penalty chance for the side, their second in successive games. Sundowns had taken the lead through Aubrey Modiba, but Chiefs hit back when Phathutshedzo Nange equalised with 15 minutes left. But Dolly could not convert their late chance from 12 yards and the team had to settle for a draw.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 4-0 KAIZER CHIEFS
League – August 13, 2022
Sundowns ran riot the last time the teams met at the start of this season, aided by individual errors from Chiefs on a dismal day for the AmaKhosi. Sirino put The Tshwane side ahead after only six minutes, before Shalulile doubled the advantage from the penalty spot. The Namibia international then bagged his brace in the second period before Ethiopian forward Abubeker Nasir added the cherry on top with a fourth to score his first goal for the club.
