Global football icon Thierry Henry will be in South Africa this weekend to witness one of the continent's most celebrated football spectacles when Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs clash in the Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation, the former Arsenal and France striker will experience the passion, intensity and atmosphere of a rivalry that has captivated South African football fans for decades.
Henry's visit comes at a special moment for the local game, with the Premier Soccer League marking 30 years of professional football through its '96-'26 commemorative campaign. The occasion adds further significance to a fixture already renowned for its history, fierce competition and unrivalled fan support.
The Soweto Derby remains one of African football's biggest events, drawing packed crowds and millions of viewers as the country's most successful and supported clubs battle for bragging rights.
For Henry, the match offers an opportunity to witness firsthand a rivalry often compared to some of the world's most iconic football contests.
"I've experienced some incredible football rivalries around the world, and I know how much the Soweto Derby means to supporters in South Africa," said Betway ambassador Henry.
"I'm excited to experience that atmosphere at FNB Stadium and to meet some of the fans who make the occasion what it is."
MEETING FANS
From the electric atmosphere in the stands to the pride and tradition carried by both clubs, the Derby promises to provide the French legend with a memorable introduction to one of football's most passionate occasions.
Beyond attending the match, Henry will also engage with supporters during his visit, meeting fans and celebrating the role they play in making the Soweto Derby one of the standout fixtures on the African football calendar.
As South African football reflects on three decades of PSL history, the presence of one of the game's greatest stars adds another layer of excitement to a match that continues to unite generations of supporters and showcase the enduring appeal of the Soweto Derby.
Jason Shield, head of sponsorship at Betway Africa, said: “The Soweto Derby represents everything that makes South African football special, the passion, the rivalry and, most importantly, the supporters who bring it to life. To have Thierry with us for such an important occasion, particularly as we celebrate 30 years of the PSL, makes this Derby even more memorable. Through S’bonise & Win, we also want to put the fans at the heart of the experience and celebrate the colour, energy and pride they bring to the game.”
