South African clubs in the African Confederation Cup
The draw for the third round matches in the African Confederation Cup on Tuesday will be conducted in Cairo on Tuesday with three South African clubs in the mix for the first time.
It is the last round of knockout matches ahead of the group phase and will be played over two legs on November 2 and November 9 – both midweek dates, which is unusual for continental club competition
The draw, at the Confederation of African football’s headquarters, pits the eight teams who won in the second round of the Confederation Cup at the weekend with the eight sides who lost in the second round of the Champions League at the same time.
That means Marumo Gallants and Royal AM will be one side of the draw and Cape Town City in the other.
The teams that drop down from the Champions League host the first leg matches on November 2 and the aggregate winners go into the group phase, which will kick off in February.
Africa’s secondary club competition is yet to produce a South African winner although both Orlando Pirates (2015 and 2022) and SuperSport United (2017) finished runners-up
Rookies Royal AM this season became the 16th South African side to compete in the Confederation Cup since it was first introduced in 2004, as an amalgamation of the old African Cup Winners’ Cup and the CAF Cup.
