Stellies stun Pirates in top-of-the-table Diski clash
Stellenbosch FC retained their No 1 spot in the DStv Diski Challenge when they came from behind to beat Orlando Pirates 2-1 at Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa on Saturday.
It was a top of the table clash between the two sides, and they did not disappoint as it lived up to expectations.
Pirates had a great start to the match and were the first to find the back of the net close to halftime through Ndumiso Ngiba.
In the second half, Stellenbosch FC came back more rejuvenated, and they turned around the tables to take all three points to Cape Town.
Stellies dominated Pirates in the early exchanges of the half. They were rewarded in the 54th minute when Solly Khunyedi combined with Jared Van Der Burg, who provided an assist to Devin Titus to get an equalizer.
Pirates were reduced to 10 men four minutes later when their goal scorer Ngiba fouled Khunyedi and received a second yellow card, and was sent off.
Stellies used that to their advantage as they extended the lead in the 62nd minute.
With 15 minutes remaining, Pirates got an equalizer through Cassius spandiel, but his goal was disallowed by referee Thokozani Ngema.
Stellies were able to absorb everything thrown by Pirates until the final minute of the match.
The result means Stellies will keep the top spot for another weekend as they have now accumulated 58 points from 28 games.
In the opening match early in the morning, SuperSport United edged Kaizer Chiefs 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller.
