There is a new challenge for DStv Diski Challenge strikers. Following the promotion of Wandile Duba and Mervin Boji, who had already set the tone in the Golden Boot race, the other players will now get a chance to surpass the duo and tussle for the number one spot.
Stellenbosch FC's pacey striker Boji and Kaizer Chiefs' Wandile Duba did not return to the Diski Challenge when the league resumed last weekend.
The duo had already set the tone in the Diski Challenge scoring charts.
Boji scored eight goals in four matches before being given cameo appearances in the first team last year.
The Kayamandi-born player was already the league's leading goal scorer.
On Wednesday night, he got his first start in the first team when they played to a 1-1 draw against Marumo Gallants, and he did fairly well despite being inexperienced against the big boys.
On the other side, the lethal Duba guided Chiefs to the DStv Diski Shield Cup title in July, where he scored three goals, a feat that saw him being crowned the Attacker of the Tournament.
His exploits did not go unnoticed after that campaign, as he was crowned the club's Most Improved Player and Attacker of the Season at the club awards.
Duba made his Chiefs debut as a substitute in a league match against Golden Arrows, where he gave a glimpse of what to expect from him.
With Chiefs' search for a new striker not bearing any results at the moment, Duba could be their answer if given a chance, as he has proved that he got what it takes to bang in the goals.
With the duo being part of their respective team first team now, players such as Jerome Karelse [Mamelodi Sundowns], Jaedin Rhodes [Cape Town City FC], Roy-Keane Avontuur [Stellenbosch FC], and Sibusiso Nkosi [Marumo Gallants] will all tussle for the Diski Challenge Golden Boot in the remaining games.
Karelse has six goals to his name and is one player to watch out for this season.
Last season Karelse started the season well, chasing Boitumelo Radiopane, who won the golden boot after scoring 24 goals. However, his season was cut short due to injury, which made him miss the rest of the campaign.
