Chiefs maintain top spot as Pirates keep title hopes alive ahead of derby weekend

The title race in the DStv Diski Challenge remains an interesting storyline locally, with a seven-match sprint to the finish line starting this weekend during the derby festival scheduled at DR Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein.
The big three, Kazier Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns as well as SuperSport United and DDC defending champions Stellenbosch FC are the five teams that are immersed in a hard-fought battle to be crowned champions in May.
This past weekend, Amakhosi continued their fine form defeating Polokwane City 2-0 to maintain their place at the top of the table. Aden McCarthy and Naledi Hlongwane scored for Amakhosi with Hlongwane scoring his ninth goal of the season.
Stellenbosch on the flip side earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over plucky Magesi FC thanks to Tauric Gamildien's late strike. The victory saw their tally increase to 47 points, one adrift of Chiefs.
Third-placed Pirates with 43 points, brushed aside SuperSport United 4-2 at Lucas Moripe Stadium. The victory revived Pirates chances of clinching the league as they are now among contenders despite having a brutal start to the season.
Sundowns who have gathered 42 points this season are fourth in the log. Sundowns returned to winning ways with a 2-1 win over AmaZulu thanks to Thapelo Maseko's brace in the first half of the match.

The upcoming derby festival in Bloemfontein could provide an indication of the contenders and pretenders among the four top teams.
Sundowns will take on SuperSport, while Chiefs will face-off their Soweto rivals, Orlando Pirates. Other derby matches in the festival include a clash between AmaZulu and Golden Arrows, as well as Marumo Gallants facing Sekhukhune.
