SuperSport a work in progress, says September following slow start

There’s no team that has ever won the DStv Diski Challenge title back-to-back.

And this is not a bad sign at all. It is good news as it shows progress of the youngsters. Most of the players who win the league the following campaign they get promoted to first team, which is one of the DStv Diski Challenge main objective to fast track their progress.

This season again, the reigning champions SuperSport United might not defend the title. Coach Thabo September has also admitted that it will be tough, in fact they are not even thinking about defending the title as they are still a work in progress.

“After the core of the team got promoted we had to get new youngsters and we knew that we will have ups and downs. We have no certain target this season, a top eight finish will be good.,” September told the website.

“We are still making silly mistakes and we are happy with that because it is part of learning for the young players. We are still a work in progress,” he added.

“A positive sign is that the mistakes help them grow character.

After eight matches, SuperSport are occupying 11th spot on the table with just nine points. They lost three, drew three and won twice.

But that is not a concern to the club coach who produced starts that includes Ime Okon last season who has now been called into Bafana Bafana preliminary squad for the World Cup qualifiers.

SuperSport will continue with their League schedule when they host TS Galaxy at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

In the past three meetings between the two sides, SuperSport collected all the points, but September says they do not have an upper hand, past results will not matter.

He explained: “TS [Galaxy] always gives us tough time. And now it could be worse they squad has been playing together for sometimes and we are inexperienced, but we are anticipating a good match and we will give our best shot.”

Galaxy on the flip side, are fifth on the log with 14 points from same number of matches [eight].
