Mamelodi Sundowns dethroned Kaizer Chiefs from the top of the DStv Diski Challenge on Sunday afternoon.

Amakhosi went to the match sitting at the top of the log with 12 points, two ahead of Sundowns, who were third. It was a win or burst situation as both teams know that three points would be vital for each of them if they are top move top of the table.

The fixture which was dubbed as the clash of the weekend did not disappoint. The highly contested match lived-up to the expectations of the more than 5000 football fans that packed Tsakane Stadium to the rafters. The only thing that was missing, it was just goals. However, Sundowns were able to score the solitary goal which decided the match in the second half through the foot of Keabetswe Ramotsei.

Chiefs created more chances in the match with two clear cut falling for dribbling wizard Mfundo Vilakazi but he fluffed both of them. Others fell for the likes of Donay Jansen who also was denied by the bar. Omega Mdaka was also denied by the bar while Puso Dithejane was among those who could’nt beat Sundowns goalkeeper on the day.

The first half was entertaining with no goals as we went to the break tied on 0-0.

In the second half, after 64 minutes Sundowns finally broke the deadlock through Ramotsei and they were able to manage the game and hand Chiefs their first defeat of the season.

The loss saw Chiefs dropping from No 1 after three weeks to the third spot with 13 points, same as Orlando Pirates who are second. Only a superior goal difference separates them as Chiefs have conceded most goal [five] and Pirates [two].

Undoubtedly the defeat would also serve as a huge wake up for Amakhosi who are tipped to contest for the title this season.
