Nkota the hero as Pirates thump Sundowns to top Diski Challenge table

The level of football displayed by the youngsters keeps on improving every week in the DStv Diski Challenge.

With thousand of fans coming to the stadium to support them, the youngsters are constantly rewarding the fanatics with some top-drawer performances.

This past weekend fixtures can attest to that. In four festival matches at Tsakane Stadium, a tally of 17 goals were scored.

In all four matches there was no small team or under-par performance. Kaizer Chiefs started the weekend with an entertaining 2-2 draw against Chippa United.

The second match on the same day between SuperSport United and Stellenbosch did not disappoint the fans who packed Tsakane Stadium to the rafters as it produced three goals.

It was a highly competitive match but Stellenbosch FC who won the Diski Challenge in 2021-22 season emerged victorious thanks to Shaakir Ahmed and Mervin Boji’s goals.

On Sunday TS Galaxy prolonged Polokwane City’s winless run when they mopped the floor with them, thumping them 5-0.

In the afternoon, Orlando Pirates came from a goal down to clinch three points against Mamelodi Sundowns in a match that was dubbed “Fixture of the weekend”.

Mohau Nkota produced a five-star performance as he scored twice and assisted the other two goals on Pirates 4-1 victory.

Sundowns broke the deadlock in the ninth minute of the match through Kutlwano Letlhaku. But their celebrations were short-lived as Mpumelelo Ndaba levelled the matters three minutes later.

The two sides fluffed chances in the first half and went to the break tied on 1-1.

It looked like the match was going to end in a draw, however things took a twist in the 75th minute when Pirates were awarded a penalty after Nkota was fouled in the box.

The youngster took the responsibility and converted the spot-kick. His show then started.

Nkota tore apart Sundowns defence to assist Lulama Nxumalo in the 81st minute, making it 3-1.

In the 86th minute, Nkota was at it again as he beat Pirates defenders to find his second goal of the match. Sundowns tried to fight back but time was not on their side they had to settle for a defeat.

This was Sundowns second defeat for Sundowns this season. They were first defeated by Chappa United in November.

The victory saw Pirates moving to the top of the table with 29 points, one point ahead of Stellenbosch FC who are second in the log. Sundowns dropped to the third place on the log.
