Kaizer Chiefs’ search for redemption will headline the DStv Premiership action this weekend, which will see five matches played from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 March and completes a full round which was started in the preceding midweek.

The Amakhosi are a wounded animal after their shock exit from the Nedbank Cup at the hands of Milford FC last weekend, and they will be under pressure to produce a performance of both substance and style when they face Soweto rivals Moroka Swallows at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.

“We have to do proper inspection on what we have to do to make it a better season; to finish the season on a high, so that we can show the people and the public that we are building,” said Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson.

The Birds have also suffered ignominy in the wake of their players strike, a subsequent heavy fine from the PSL and a parting of ways with coach Steve Komphela, but they can at least point to a place in the next round of the Nedbank Cup after overcoming lower league Platinum City Rovers (albeit on penalties).

The weekend’s action opens on Friday evening at the Danie Craven Stadium, as Stellenbosch FC host Chippa United, while Saturday has two matches sandwiching the Chiefs v Swallows derby: in the afternoon, Polokwane City will welcome Orlando Pirates to the Peter Mokaba Stadium, while a night game at the King Zwelithini Stadium pits KwaZulu-Natal rivals Richards Bay against Royal AM.

For the latter clash, the Natal Rich Boyz will be looking to build on their Nedbank Cup triumph over Polokwane last weekend, as they struggle to lift themselves out of the relegation playoff berth.

“So, I know people are saying it [the Nedbank Cup] will distract us and all that but if you want to do well in the league you still need to be confident enough first,” said coach Vuzumuzi Vilakazi. “If we can use these games to do such a thing – so that it will have an impact going forward – then so be it.”

The weekend will be rounded off on Sunday afternoon at Athlone Stadium when bottom-of-the-log Cape Town Spurs play host to TS Galaxy.
