Stellenbosch FC moved up to second position on the DStv Premiership log this week, following a hard-fought 1-0 win over their Western Cape counterparts Cape Town City at the DHL Stadium on Tuesday night.

Following a largely professional performance by Steve Barker’s charges, it was Devon Titus’ strike in the 33rd minute that separated the two sides on a chilly night in the Mother City.

The home team got the game off to a positive start at the DHL Stadium, with Taahir Goedeman producing the first shot at goal inside the first two minutes. City continued to see more of the ball during opening stages of the game, while Stellenbosch looked to hit the hosts on the break.

Not holding back, Stellenbosch produced a couple of goal scoring opportunities of their own early on, as Anicet Oura probed on the edge of City’s 18-yard-area.

Stellies began finding their attacking rhythm en-route to the 15th minute mark, with Iqraam Rayners joining in on the fun with a right-footed shot from outside the area which went narrowly wide.

The Cape Winelands side broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute, following a swift move in transition as Antonio van Wyk found Devin Titus with a through ball into the area, who then slotted the ball into the back of the net with ease.

Steve Barker’s side continued to find success going forward shortly before the break, however, City managed to keep the visitors at bay with rugged defending.

City held most of the ball after the restart and actively began searching for an equalizer. Khanyisa Mayo looked lively during the opening stages of the second-half and put the Stellenbosch defence on high alert following an attempt at goal in the 49th minute.

The Citizens dominated on the ball at the hour mark but battled to breach the Stellenbosch defence as the likes of Relebogile Mokhuoane and Goedeman tried their luck from distance.

Stellenbosch proved to be a tough nut to crack as the clock began to wind down as City often took the direct approach in search of an equaliser. Nevertheless, the Winelands outfit did well to see out the game and managed to walk away with all three points in the bag.
