PSL return – all you need to know

The South African football season gets under way in August with the DStv Premiership, MTN8 and Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Clubs have been busy in the transfer market, bolstering their squads and technical teams in an effort to halt the Mamelodi Sundowns dynasty.

SuperSport have also gone into the market to bolster its offering by acquiring the services of prominent player-turned-pundit Phumudzo Manenzhe, who brings a wealth of experience to SuperSport, having transformed from a successful PSL player to a sharp-minded analyst.

Known as “The Bold”, Manenzhe will be joining a celebrated TV team that includes Carol Tshabalala, Mpho Maboi, Phumlani Msibi, Julia Stuart, Thomas Mlambo and several former top players.

Due to the 2022 Fifa World Cup, which will be played between 21 November and 18 December in Qatar, the PSL season will take a break from 6 November and 7 January next year.

The 2022/23 DStv Premiership season will end on Saturday, 20 May 2023 and the final of the Nedbank Cup will be played on Saturday, 27 May 2023.

DStv Premiership

The country’s top-flight league will get the football season under way on 5 August with some mouth-watering clashes with Mamelodi Sundowns opening their title defence against Cape Town City.

Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates and Swallows FC will meet on 6 August, while Arthur Zwane will begin his tenure as Kaizer Chiefs head coach with a trip to Royal AM who are under the tutelage of new coach Khabo Zondo.

There will be a KZN derby on the opening weekend of the campaign, with newly-promoted Richards Bay visiting Golden Arrows at Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday.

Last season’s best eight teams will fight it out for the multimillion Rand title starting from the quarterfinals from 27 August.

Mamelodi Sundowns will look to retain the title they won last season when they beat Cape Town City 3-2 in a shootout after extra time had seen the game locked at 1-1, following goals from Thapelo Morena and Fagrie Lakay.

Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, Stellenbosch, Royal AM, AmaZulu and Cape Town City will all be hoping to clinch the season’s first available piece of silverware.

Motsepe Foundation Championship

The Motsepe Foundation secured funding from companies associated with the “Motsepe Family” to sponsor the National First Division renaming the tournament to be known as “Motsepe Foundation Championship”.

Last season’s NFD champions Richards Bay will be plying their trade in the DStv Premiership this season while runners-up University of Pretoria, who lost in the promotion and relegation playoffs, will look for direct promotion in the new season that will begin on 2 September.

The latest partnership with the PSL is added to the local football portfolio under the Motsepe Foundation, which has also invested millions of rands in the ABC Motsepe League and the Kay Motsepe Schools Cup.
