Cape Town City slap hefty price tag on Mayo

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has slapped a 2-million US dollar price tag on striker Khanyisa Mayo and says he wants to sell the striker to Europe next season, warning off local club who have expressed interest in acquiring his services.

Comitis confirmed there had been brief discussions with champions Mamelodi Sundowns about signing the 24-year-old, who was joint top scorer in the DStv Premership last season with 12 goals, alongside Peter Shalulile.

“But did not go very far because we want to keep him,” Comitis told a press conference on on Tuesday.

“Mayo’s value is in excess of $2 million, in my opinion, and we're not going to compromise. And, also, he also deserves to go to a big club.

“So, we want to be patient. He himself understands that he possibly needs one more season with us,” the City owner added.

“If Mayo gets 15 goals this season, it is going to be the hardest thing to keep in this country. We've had a lot of interest from Qatar, we had a lot of interest Saudi Arabia. But I think he deserves to go to Europe. He has that ability. And he's got the mentality for it.

“But I do think that he has a job to do with us here. And I think with his goals, we can certainly turn that into silverware.”

Comitis said they had also been an offer for their Cameroonian midfielder Brice Ambina. “We had a club from Latvia that approached us for Ambina. We had a very, very lucrative offer for him but things didn't work out. We were relieved, and we are happy to keep him. I think arguably he is the best No 6 that this club has ever had, playing as an anchor midfielder. “

City have added a new Angolan striker Jo Paciencia, who joins from Luanda’s Inter Clube. He takes the place of Bertrand Mani, the burly Cameroonian who has been released.
