The 2022/23 DStv Premiership season in Numbers

We round up all the keys stats and facts around the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season, where Mamelodi Sundowns claimed a handsome victory to claim another title.

0 – SuperSport United were the only side to go through the season unbeaten at home (W10 D5). They are the eighth club to achieve that in PSL history.

0 – Cape Town City were the only team not to receive a penalty this season.

0 – Sundowns, TS Galaxy and AmaZulu are the only sides who did not lose once ahead in a match in this campaign.

2 – Richards Bay took two points from the last 36 available this season to plummet from second place in the league after round 18 and finish 13th, three points above the relegation zone. The Natal Rich Boys failed to win any of their final 14 games.

2 – This campaign is only the second time that Kaizer Chiefs have finished a PSL season with a negative goal-difference (-1). The previous was their disastrous domestic campaign in 2020/21.

4 – Chiefs’ Caleb Bimenyimana converted the most penalties this season with four – including a hattrick of spot-kicks in one game against Stellenbosch FC.

5 – Chiefs had the fewest draws in the league this season with five, their joint lowest ever in the DStv Premiership.

6 – Sundowns’ league title win is their sixth in succession and 16th overall. Both are South African records.

6 – Only six teams had a positive goal-difference this season – Sundowns (+39), Orlando Pirates (+19), SuperSport (+12), Galaxy (+6), Cape Town City (+4) and Stellenbosch FC (+1).

6 - Mfundo Thikazi scored six goals for Royal AM this season and all of them came away from home, with not a single strike in front of his own fans. Monnapule Saleng from Pirates (8) scored the most away goals of any player in the topflight.

7 – Referee Tshidiso Maruping remarkably gave seven penalty kicks in seven DStv Premiership games in which he officiated this season, including three for Chiefs v Stellenbosch FC. He also gave a controversial one against Pirates versus Maritzburg United. He did not officiate in any games after January.

8 – Marumo Gallants striker Ranga Chivaviro was the greatest super sub this season with eight goals in nine appearances off the bench during the campaign. He managed 10 goals in all.

10 – Gallants were the worst travellers this season with only 10 points picked up on the road. Sundowns were the best with 32. Second worst on the road were Sekhukhune United, who managed only 11 points and seven goals scored in their 15 games. Royal AM conceded the most goals away, 29 in 15 games, almost two per match.

11 – The Cape Town City duo of Taariq Fielies and Brice Ambina picked up the most disciplinary points this season with 11. Each received eight yellow cards and one red. City had more players sent off (6) through the campaign than any other side.

12 – Chiefs’ dozen defeats is the most they have ever suffered in a 30-game DStv Premiership season.

12 – Sundowns’ Peter Shalulile and Khanyisa Mayo from Cape Town City were top scorers in the league with 12 goals each. That is the third lowest total ever for a Golden Boot winner.

14 – Chippa United and Richards Bay picked up the fewest home points this season with 14. It will be no surprise to anyone that Sundowns had the most with 38, three more than SuperSport. Richards Bay managed only seven goals in front of their own fans in their 15 games.

14 – Relegated Gallants and mid-table Galaxy had the most draws this season with 14, one short of half of their matches. Had Gallants turned only one of those into a win they would have survived.

14 – AmaZulu managed to gain the most points after falling behind in matches with 14 (W3 D4 L11). Chippa United went behind the most, in 21 of their 30 games, and managed to rescue 11 points.

15 – Sundowns set a new PSL record of 15 wins in a row, beating their only previous record of 11 successive victories that was set in 2006/07.

16 – The winning margin in terms of points for Sundowns, which equals their own record set last season.

16 – Pirates’ 16 wins is the most they have managed since they won the league title in 2011/12 (17).

17 – Sundowns and Pirates each had 17 different scorers this season, the most of any club. Richards Bay (9) had the fewest.

18 – Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams set a new best mark for clean sheets in a 30-game PSL season. The previous record of 17 was held by Pirates’ Moeneeb Josephs, but Williams beat that mark by one.

19 – Cape Town City dropped 19 points from winning positions this season, the most of any club. How different things might have been for them …

20 – Richards Bay managed the fewest goals this season with only 20 in their 30 games.

21 – Sundowns’ 21 wins is one short of their own 30-game DStv Premiership record that was set in the 2015/16 season.

24 – Sundowns went unbeaten for 24 games to the end of the DStv Premiership season, since a 2-1 loss at SuperSport in early September.

39 – Sundowns’ +39 goal-difference is a record for a 30-game DStv Premiership season. It beats their previous best mark of +36 set in last campaign. Coupled with +35 the year before, they are +110 over the last three campaigns.

42 – Royal AM used the most players this season, a remarkable 42 different individuals took to the field for them.

44 – Chippa conceded the most goals this season with 44. That was one more than Royal AM.

52 – Sundowns were far and away the highest scorers this season with 52 goals. The next best was Pirates’ 40.

70 – The number of points amassed by Sundowns this season. That is one shy of their own DStv Premiership record of 71 set in the 2015/16 campaign.

70 – A total of 70 per cent of matches (167) this season had a winner, while 30 per cent of games (73) ended in a draw. There were 68 away wins (28 per cent) by DStv Premiership teams.

503 – The number of goals scored in this DStv Premiership season. That is an average of 2.10 per game, an improvement on last season’s average of 1.99 per match. A total of 217 of the season’s goals (43 per cent) were scored away from home.

2 700 – Sekhukhune defender Daniel Cardoso and Galaxy’s Given Msimango are the only two players who featured in every minute for their clubs this season.
