Mamelodi Sundowns will set a new benchmark for the domestic game if they avoid defeat against AmaZulu in the DStv Premiership on Tuesday evening.

They will extend their record streak of unbeaten league games to 40 if AmaZulu do not beat them in the clash at Loftus Versfeld.

Sundowns have not lost any of their past 39 league matches since a 2-1 loss to SuperSport United at Atteridgeville on September 2, 2022.

It is now one year, five months and 25 days since that setback and Sundowns have gone onto rewrite the local record books as they continue.

They are looking to become the first club to go through an entire domestic season without defeat, having reached the halfway mark of their DStv Premiership campaign with 12 wins and three draws.

Victory on Tuesday would also see them extend their lead at the top of the table to 12 points and still with a game in hand over their closest challenger Cape Town City and SuperSport, who meet in Cape Town on Wednesday.

Sundowns’ match against AmaZulu has been brought forward from the weekend because the champions will be involved in their last African Champions League group game against TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday.
