After a thrilling encounter at the Athlone Stadium, Cape Town City and Kaizer Chiefs shared the spoils in a 0-0 stalemate in the DStv Premiership on Saturday afternoon.

Looking to continue their dominance over Chiefs in the league, the result saw City fail to record a league double over the Soweto giants in the 2023/24 campaign.

With the game kicking-off to a frantic pace at the Athlone Stadium, Amakhosi asserted themselves on the encounter by creating a couple of goal scoring opportunities inside the first 10 minutes of the game.

City began to settle on the ball with 15 minutes on the clock and moved forward with slick passing moves from defensive settings.

Darwin Gonzalez came closest to opening the scoring during the early stages of the match with one of his shots hitting Bruce Bvuma’s upright.

While the game slowed down en-route to the half-hour mark, Aprocius Petrus attempted to take the game by the scruff of the neck by unleashing a thunderous shot from range that forced Bvuma to make a stretching save.

Both City and Chiefs struggled to make the most of their attacking opportunities toward the halftime whistle with the home side creating some of the best scoring chances in the first 45.

Amakhosi looked the livelier of the two sides after the restart and put the hosts under constant pressure leading up to the hour-mark.

City were dealt with a blow in the 62nd minute of the match, as Thabo Nodada was summoned to the medical room after picking up an injury.

While neither side held onto the ball for prolonged periods of the second 45, it was Chiefs who edged the hosts to the possession count.

The Glamour Boys actively searched for an opener during the closing stages of the match and frequently had City back-peddling in their own half.

Nevertheless, after an intense 90 minutes, the game ended in a 0-0 stalemate in Athlone.
