The latest installment of the Tshwane Derby between Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United will be played on Wednesday, a first game in the DStv Premiership for The Brazilians in two months.
Few teams have been able to go toe-to-toe with Sundowns in the last few years, but SuperSport are certainly one of them and were the last team to inflict a defeat on Rulani Mokwena’s side in the league – though that was before he became sole head coach.
The last 10 fixtures have seen six wins for Sundowns, but also two for SuperSport to go with two draws, showing the Chloorkop side have certainly not had everything their own way.
We look back at those previous 10 clashes.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 0-2 SUPERSPORT UNITED
MTN8 Semifinal, second leg – September 18, 2019
Future Sundowns player Teboho Mokoena gave SuperSport an early lead in the second leg of their MTN8 semifinal, before Jamie Webber made sure of the win late on as SuperSport stunned their rivals. They would go on to lift the trophy, beating Highlands Park 1-0 in the final.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 1-0 SUPERSPORT UNITED
Nedbank Cup Last 32 – February 8, 2020
Another cup meeting between the sides in the 2019/20 season and this time it was Sundowns who came out on top thanks to Sibusiso Vilakazi’s winner in the first half. It was a hard-fought contest though in what was the fifth time the teams had met in the campaign.
SUPERSPORT UNITED 0-0 MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
DStv Premiership – January 16, 2021
It would be almost a year before the duo met again and this league encounter finished in a 0-0 draw in a game played behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was the first ever Tshwane Derby without fans.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 3-1 SUPERSPORT UNITED
DStv Premiership – May. 26, 2021
A special game in many ways for Sundowns as it was the three points that ensured they would be 2020/21 DStv Premiership champions, not that it was ever really in doubt. SuperSport were rocked by a seventh minute red card for DR Congo midfielder Guily Manziba and never recovered. Lebogang Maboe put Sundowns ahead, before former Matsatsantsa player Aubrey Modiba added a second and Zwane got the third before halftime. Zwane missed a penalty in the second period and SuperSport scored a late consolation through Mokoena.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 2-2 SUPERSPORT UNITED
DStv Premiership – November 24, 2021
Sundowns appeared to be cruising in this league clash when goals either side of halftime from Neo Maema and Peter Shalulile had them 2-0 up. But credit the fightback from SuperSport as Gamphani Lungu pulled one back and Mokoena fired in a free kick with 10 minutes to go to rescue a point.
SUPERSPORT UNITED 0-1 MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
DStv Premiership – December 11, 2021
Such was the bizarre nature of the fixture schedule in the 2021/22 season that the teams met in their reverse league fixture just 17 days later. This time an early goal from Shalulile settled the contest in the favour of The Brazilians.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 2-0 SUPERSPORT UNITED
MTN8 quarterfinal – August 28, 2022
It would be another nine months before the sides clashed again as they met in the quarterfinals of the MTN8 at the start of the 2022/23 season, with Sundowns needing two late goals to be confirmed winners. New Chilean signing Marcelo Allende made a bright start to his time at Chloorkop and netted a second goal in as many games after making his debut. This one came on 80 minutes. Ethiopian forward Abubeker Nasir netted a late second in injury-time.
SUPERSPORT UNITED 2-1 MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
DStv Premiership – September 2, 2022
Just a few days later and the teams were at it again in the league, but this time it was SuperSport who came out on top. Thapelo Maseko and Bradley Grobler – the first of his career against Sundowns – scored first half goals to put them in the driving seat, before Nasir got another in injury-time, but it was too little, too late. This is the last time Sundowns lost in the league, 32 games ago …
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 1-0 SUPERSPORT UNITED
DStv Premiership – January 16, 2023
The reverse fixture last campaign went the way of Sundowns, though it was a close-run thing as only a goal from Maema separated the sides. He was teed up by Casius Mailula, who has since left for Major League Soccer.
