Stellenbosch FC will not be hosting Kaizer Chiefs in the Winelands town again with Sunday’s DStv Premiership clash switched to the Cape Town Stadium following the crowd invasion and vandalism that marred their MTN8 clash earlier in the season.
A large crowd is expected for the league meeting, dictating the move away from Stellenbosch where the club’s home ground proved unable to handle the influx of supporters for their cup tie on August 28.
The league match had been originally scheduled for the Danie Craven Stadium, when the fixtures were first released by the Premier Soccer League, but the club requested a move several weeks ago.
Stellenbosch first asked Chiefs if they would swap fixtures, to which Chiefs agreed, but the idea was not approved by the Premier Soccer League.
It left Stellenbosch waiting to find out whether they could use the Cape Town Stadium, which had been book for this weekend by Cape Town City, hosting an African Champions League second round, first leg tie against Petro Atletico of Angola.
In order to help Stellenbosch in their dilemma, City agreed to play the game against Petro on Saturday, leaving Stellenbosch to host Chiefs on Sunday.
The Premier Soccer League’s disciplinary committee fined Chiefs R200 000 for the chaos caused when their fans broke down the fence around the pitch at the Danie Craven Stadium and stormed the field after their club narrowly won on post-match penalties.
Half of the amount was suspended for 24 months, provided the club is not found guilty of the same offence during that period.
Chiefs pleaded guilty but the PSL was directed to carry the costs of the hearing because they were the event organiser. Chiefs were also ordered to pay the costs to fix the inner perimetre fence.
