Huddersfield have appointed Andre Breitenreiter as their new head coach, the struggling English second-tier football club announced on Thursday.

The 50-year-old German, who guided Zurich to the Swiss Super League title in 2022, will join the Terriers from February 19, after completing visa requirements.

Caretaker manager Jon Worthington, who replaced Darren Moore at the end of last month, will remain in charge for Saturday's Championship match at home to Hull.

Breitenreiter guided Paderborn into Germany's Bundesliga for the first time in the club's history in 2014.

He then led Schalke to a fifth-place finish and qualification for the Europa League.

Breitenreiter left in 2016 following a lone season at Schalke and promptly won promotion with Hannover.

His time in Switzerland was followed by a return to Germany's top flight with Hoffenheim.

Breitenreiter was sacked in February with the club just above the Bundesliga relegation.

Huddersfield owner Kevin Nagle told the Yorkshire club's website: "At the start of this process, we were very clear on what we expect our head coach to deliver.

"Atop that list was the creation of a winning culture, where there is no fear over taking bold options to try and get all three points in every game."

"We also want to deliver a type of football that will excite our supporters, who love a high-tempo, front-foot, all-action style. We believe Andre is the ideal candidate to deliver this."

Breitenreiter is not the first German to take charge of Huddersfield. David Wagner, now in charge of Championship rivals Norwich, steered the Terriers to promotion to the lucrative Premier League in 2017.

Wagner helped Huddersfield remain among English football's elite in the 2017/18 season before leaving in January 2019, shortly before relegation was confirmed.

Huddersfield are 20th in the Championship table, five points above the relegation zone.
