Ethiopia Nigd Bank lead the Ethiopia Premier League by one point and a superior goal difference despite being held to a 1-1 draw by defending champions St George on Sunday.

Hambericho Durame and Wolaitta Dicha, meanwhile, played to a goalless draw in the second game of the day.

However, all eyes were on the title clash involving the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia after their closest challengers, Mekelakeya, beat Sidama Coffee 4-1 on Saturday.

St George scored first via a 21st-minute own goal by Ethiopia Nigd defender Ephrem Tamerat.

However, the Bankers showed their competitive edge with an equaliser just before halftime with Basiru Umar the goal-scorer level the game in the 41st minute.

The draw takes Ethiopia Nigd Bank to 58 points, one more than Mekelakeya, who are second with 57 points with two games to go.

St George are out of the title race after falling off the wagon several weeks ago, and it's now a straight fight between the top two.

The Horsemen will consider this a great result against the Bankers who have been expected to win to shore up their title chase.

St George face their eternal rivals in the Addis Ababa derby next week, with pride to play for especially with Ethiopia Coffee placed higher than St George.

Ethiopia Coffee occupy third spot with 50 points, while St George are fifth with 44 points.
