Hadiya Hossana striker Baye Gezahegn, Dawit Mamo of Mekelakeya and Amsalu Tilahun are some of the high-profile players sanctioned by the Ethiopia Premier League this past week.
The Ethiopian Premier League Competition Leadership and Ethical Committee met on Sunday, 5 May, and after examining the disciplinary report submitted by the referees and observers of the Ethiopian Premier League matches, they passed various decisions.
According to the disciplinary guidelines of the Ethiopian Football Federation, for the offences committed by the players, Baye Gezahegn from Hadiya Hossana, who was sent off for insulting the referee, was suspended for three games and also fined 3 000 Birr.
Amsalu Tilahun, the defender from Fasil City and Dawit Mamo from Mekelakeya were both shown yellow cards in five different games and according to the disciplinary guidelines of the Ethiopian Football Federation, they will both be suspended for one game and also fined 1 500 Birr.
Various decisions have been made based on reports with regard to disciplinary measures meted out to clubs.
Hadiya Hossana were sanctioned because seven players of the club were carded for various offences in the game of the week, and it was decided that they are to pay a fine of 5 000 Birr, according to the disciplinary guidelines of the EFF.
Bahir Dar City were also punished after it was reported that the reserve players of the club broke the roof of the shelter in Adama Science and Technology, and it was decided that the club should repair the broken shelter or pay the price of the property provided by the university administration.
The bookings aside, week 22 of the Betking Ethiopian Premier League in Adama and Hawassa city produced some tantalising games, with six of the eight matches producing interesting wins and two games ending in draws.
A total of 23 goals were scored by 22 different players, with 21 of them coming in open play and two from penalties.
There were 34 cards issued this week; 33 players and team leaders were reprimanded with yellow cards, while one player saw a red card.
