Bahir Dar City cut St George's lead in the BetKing Ethiopia Premier League table to three points after earning a 2-1 win over Fasil City in the Amhara derby on Saturday, and Ethiopia Coffee earned a memorable win over Wolkite City.
Bahir Dar will relish the moment because it was double joy for them in what was an explosive encounter with no goals for much of the first half despite the best efforts of both teams.
However, Tafesse Solomon broke the deadlock for Fasil City five minutes from the end of the first half, a brilliant cracker on 40 minutes, with the first half ending Bahir Dar 0-1 Fasil City.
The pre-match attention had been on former Bahir Dar City striker Osei Mawuli, but it was former Fasil captain, now Bahir Dar captain, Yared Bayeh who made the headlines. Bayeh scored the equaliser for Bahir Dar City.
Bahir Dar would prove too strong for their neighbours as Alelign Azene scored an 80th-minute winner.
Biruk Beyene has been the heir to the throne of Abubekher Nasir for Ethiopia Coffee and while he has not hit the same heights as Nasir, he proved the difference in the tie with his winning goal for Coffee on 87 minutes.
The win for Coffee takes them into the top four for the first time this season with 25 points, eight points adrift of Ethiopian Insurance in third place with 33 points.
