Ethiopia National Team Head Coach Wubetu Abate has departed his role from the national team by mutual agreement with the Ethiopia Football Federation.

The Federation confirmed in a statement that the coach requested to step away from the national team by a written letter.

The executive committee reviewed his request and decided to release him by mutual agreement.

The news of Abate's resignation was expected as pressure has been mounting on him, especially after two defeats to Guinea in the latest round Afcon 2023 Qualifiers.

He has been Ethiopia coach since September 2020. His initial two-year contract ended last year, but was renewed for a further two years until September 2024.

During his time as head coach he helped Ethiopia qualify for Afcon 2022 and Chan 2023.

Last year's victory over Egypt in an Afcon 2023 Qualifiers second-round match was his biggest achievement with the national team.

Wubetu is a high-profile Ethiopian football coach with great pedigree.

He was the coach when Ethiopia Coffee won the League title for their first and only time in the 2010/11 season.

He has also managed Adama City, Dedebit, CBE, Hawassa City, Fasil City and Sebeta City.

He also had a stint in Sudan where he managed top Sudanese side Al Ahly Shendi.

in his tenure as head coach of the "Walyas" as the Ethiopia national Football team is known, Coach Wubetu lead them through 36 matches (including friendly matches).

He registered 10 wins, 11 draws and 15 defeats.
