This is the second Fifa World Cup meeting between Portugal and Uruguay, with the South Americans eliminating Portugal in the second round of the 2018 edition in Russia.

Uruguay have won four of their last five Fifa World Cup matches against European nations (including a 2-1 victory over Portugal), though did lose to France in their last such match. The Sky Blue had won just two of their previous 25 such matches before this run (D8 L15).

Portugal have won just one of their last nine meetings with South American nations in all competitions (D3 L5), beating Argentina 1-0 in a friendly in November 2014.

Following their 3-2 win against Ghana, Portugal are looking to win their opening two group games for the third time at the World Cup. They previously did so in 1966 and 2006, eventually reaching the semifinals in both of those editions.

Uruguay have failed to score in their last two World Cup games – only once have they done so in three consecutive games at the tournament (between 1986 and 1990). However, the South American nation have won their second group game in each of the last three editions of the World Cup.

Uruguay have kept a clean sheet in each of their last five group stage games at the World Cup – no side has ever done so in six consecutive group games in the competition's history (including second and final group rounds in earlier editions).

Portugal have lost just one of their last 13 group stage games at the World Cup (W7 D5), going down 4-0 against Germany in their tournament opener in 2014. They've won their second match in five of their seven previous appearances at the competition, failing only in 1986 (0-1 v Poland) and 2014 (2-2 v USA).

Last time out against Ghana, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score in five different editions of the World Cup. All eight of his goals at the tournament have been in the group stages – coming into the second round of games, no player has scored more World Cup goals without ever netting in the knockout rounds than the Portuguese.

Bruno Fernandes created more chances than any other Portugal player in their victory over Ghana last time out, becoming just the second Portuguese player to provide two assists in a single World Cup match after José Torres against Brazil in 1966.

Both Edinson Cavani and Luis Suárez scored for Uruguay in the 2010, 2014 and 2018 World Cups, and either could become the first player from that nation to score in four different editions of the tournament.
