Ghana earned a valuable point in their 0-0 draw with England in a World Cup Group L clash in Boston on Tuesday and are now well placed to make the round of 32.
England had the lion’s share of chances, but Ghana were resolute in defence and showed their excellent organisation under coach Carlos Queiroz.
These are SuperSport’s player ratings for the game:
Benjamin Asare (7): Asare made some huge saves and commanded his box well, but was at times also reliant on his defenders to get him out of trouble with last-ditch clearances. It is another clean sheet for him at the finals, though.
Marvin Senaya (7): The right-back put in an epic shift and ran all game, making four clearances and winning five of his seven tackles. There was not the opportunity to get forward much in the game, but defensively he was sound.
Jonas Adjetey (5): It was a bit of a struggle for him as he won only one of his seven duels and made a critical error that led to a shot which England might have scored from. To be fair, he was up against world-class strikers, but he will think he might have done better.
Jerome Opoku (7): Made up for his central defensive partner with some key challenges and won six of his seven duels. Also made five big clearances.
Gideon Mensah (7): A top showing from the left-back in terms of his positional play and bravery. He made two key interceptions and nine clearances, as well as four recoveries.
Thomas Partey (7): Jeered by the England fans before the game, he had a good showing as the defensive midfielder and was an able screen for the back four.
Inaki Williams (5): Didn’t see enough of the ball and had only 16 touches all game. When he was in possession, he was a bit loose and coughed it up. Also won none of his five duels.
Caleb Yirenkyi (5): Also outfought and had little impact on the game, though he might argue that was due to the fact his side were on the back foot the whole time. Maybe he has a case.
Antoine Semenyo (5): Virtually anonymous in the game, but like the rest of the attacking players, had precious little to work with. Ghana only managed two shots on goal all game.
Kwasi Sibo (6): Every one of his 15 passes found a teammate, but he managed only one progressive carry and might have hoped for more influence on the game than that.
Jordan Ayew (6): Had one touch in the England box all game and cut a lonely figure up front. He did get back to defend and put in a shift there, which bumps up his rating.
Issahaku Fatawu (6): Came on for Williams after 66 minutes but suffered the same fate as the man he replaced. Just too little of the ball.
Prince Adu (6): Had the one big chance of the game for Ghana, but fluffed his lines at the vital moment as he found himself behind the England defence. He dallied too long and allowed the defensive cover to close him down.
Kojo Peprah and Abdul Baba were not on the pitch long enough for a rating.
