In what has been a remarkable debut season in the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC), Mpho “Phopho” Padime has established himself as a key player for Orlando Pirates. The young dribbling maestro joined Pirates just before the season, sparking widespread curiosity about whether he could transition his electrifying flair, an attribute celebrated during festive local tournaments, into the demands of professional football.
As Pirates embarked on their quest for league supremacy, Padime emerged as a pivotal figure within the squad, consistently delivering when the stakes were high. “I think I can be proud of the season I've had with Orlando Pirates,” Padime expressed after the team clinched the league title.
“I had a lot of things to learn and still have, but being in this squad has given me the opportunity to showcase my abilities and contribute to the team’s success.”
His debut season was nothing short of extraordinary, culminating in Padime finishing as Pirates' top goalscorer with an impressive tally of 10 goals. Furthermore, his nine assists underscored his influence on the pitch, with his contributions amounting to an impressive 19 goals in total, a testament to his emerging talent.
Padime recognises the support he has received from the Pirates' coaching staff, which has been instrumental in his development. “I’ve been wanting this opportunity to showcase to South African fans that I can play football. In ekasi football, I often played to entertain fans with skills, but here, I’ve learned that success is defined by contributing to the team with goals and assists,” he said.
The culmination of the season saw Pirates clinch the DDC title with a historic 75 points, setting a new record for the league. For Padime, however, this is merely the beginning. “This is not the end; I will return next season to continue learning and improving as a player and as an individual,” he declared, emphasising his commitment to his growth.
With a promising future ahead, Mpho Padime is a name to watch as he seeks to make his mark in South African football, following in the footsteps of Mfundo Vilakazi, who also got his fame from the dusty kasi grounds to DDC, then professional ranks.
