France's Olympic 100m hurdles silver medallist Cyrena Samba-Mayela, will not defend her European title after pulling out of next month's championships because of injury.
"For several weeks I have been dealing with physical pain that has already prevented me from taking my chances at the French championships," Samba-Mayela wrote on social media Monday.
"At this point, I do not think I will be able to catch up on the accumulated backlog and be at the level needed to defend my European title with dignity."
After her European win in Rome in 2024 and Olympic silver at the Paris Games later that year, Samba-Mayela sat out much of 2025 because of a calf injury.
The French record holder (12.31sec) put in some solid performances in recent weeks, including a 12.50sec in Texas in June, but the 25-year-old withdrew from the Paris Diamond League meet.
"On medical advice, in agreement with the federation and my team, it seemed that it was the right decision to take," she said.
