Muntari is one of the finest midfielders to come out of Ghana and although his stay in the Premier League was relatively short, he left his mark.

He joined then-topflight Portsmouth in 2007 after six years with Udinese in Italy, having long expressed his desire to play in England.

His fee is believed to have been a club-record £7.1-million, and he immediately had an impact and became a crowd favourite.

He scored a goal and grabbed an assist in the 7-4 victory over Reading, to this day the Premier League game with the most goals scored.

His highlight in the Premier League was an away game at Aston Villa where he scored two stunning long-range goals, as he had done so often for the Black Stars, while he also helped Pompey to FA Cup glory at the end of the season when they beat Cardiff City in the final.

Muntari had become a target for top clubs after his excellent performances and Inter Milan swooped for a £14-million transfer, with Pompey very reluctant sellers.

He helped Inter to back-to-back Serie A title wins and the Uefa Champions League, but by the second half of the 2010/11 season was out of favour and secured a six-month loan at Sunderland as he returned to the Premier League. He made nine appearances for the Black Cats, scoring one goal.

Muntari spent the next season on loan at AC Milan before three more years at Inter Milan, and then spells in Saudi Arabia and Spain.

He had five goals and five assists in his 38 Premier League games.
