City Football Group's Troyes avoid drop after Bordeaux bankruptcy

City Football Group's Troyes will remain in France's second-division Ligue 2 following Bordeaux's relegation to the third tier after filing for bankruptcy, the French football league (LFP) said Tuesday.

"No action (will be) taken against the club by the DNCG (National Directorate of Management Control) in relation to its remaining in Ligue 2... subject to it maintaining professional status by decision of the LFP's board of directors," the league said in a statement.

After finishing last season in 17th place, Troyes were set to drop into France's third division.

But Bordeaux's demotion from Ligue 2 to the third-tier National due to their financial woes has enabled the City Football Group club to stay up.

The club welcomed the decision, vowing to "build a team that will compete with ambition and represent Troyes with humility".

"The club's thoughts are with Girondins de Bordeaux, its employees and supporters, and we wish them all the best for the future," it said in a statement.

Last week, six-time French champions Bordeaux announced they would become an amateur club for the first time in almost 90 years after filing for bankruptcy.

The club needs to find €40 million to balance their books and had been in talks with the owners of Liverpool, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), before the American investors pulled out of negotiations this month.
