Away fans banned at Anderlecht-Standard Liege games until 2025
Matches between Anderlecht and Standard Liege will be played without visiting supporters in the stands until the end of next season after numerous incidents of fan trouble, the two Belgian clubs said on Monday.
Since 2017, the Clasico, between two of the countries most storied sides, has been stopped four times, with last Thursday's meeting in the last 16 of the Belgian Cup the most recent incident.
"Despite elaborate security measures, the Clasico ended in violent clashes and significant material damage," the two clubs said.
"The Clasico, which for the majority of fans is based on a healthy rivalry, has escalated four times in the last six years because of small groups of supporters on both sides.
"At least until the end of the 2024-2025 season, no visiting fans will be allowed to attend matches between Standard and RSC Anderlecht.
"Both clubs deeply regret this decision and are aware that it will also affect some of the most well-intentioned and loyal supporters, but they want to send a strong signal that violence has no place in and around a football stadium," they added.
On Sunday, the teams drew 2-2 in Brussels in the Belgian Pro League, with Standard having banned their fans from making the journey.
Following last week's incidents, the Belgian federation could punish the sides with having to play matches without any fans in the stadium.
Also on Monday, the Greek government announced football matches will be played behind closed doors until 12 February in an attempt to clamp down on violence at sports events.
