South African Luke Truter produced a composed performance under pressure to claim the Betway Blu Label Unlimited Invitational #5 at Eye of Africa Signature Golf Estate in Eikenhof, Gauteng.
Truter finished the three-round tournament on seven-under-par 209, edging Francois van Staden by one shot to secure his maiden Blu Label Unlimited/Bushveld Golf Tour title.
The victory caps a strong season for the 22-year-old amateur, who has repeatedly threatened to contend at the top of the leaderboard before finally converting his form into silverware.
Truter’s breakthrough was built around a superb second round. After opening with a level-par 72, he responded with a remarkable bogey-free 65, moving to seven-under-par for the tournament and into second place, just one shot behind Van Staden.
With the title within reach, Truter maintained his composure in the final round, carding another 72 in challenging conditions. His three-round total of 72-65-72 was enough to secure a one-shot victory.
Van Staden finished runner-up on six-under-par 210, while Sentanio Minnie completed the podium on three-under-par 213. Wandre Snyman was fourth on one-under-par 215.
Truter’s victory marks his first documented Blu Label Unlimited/Bushveld Golf Tour title, following a series of impressive performances on the developmental circuit this season.
He had already demonstrated his ability to compete with professionals and leading amateurs, including a tied-second finish at Blu Label Unlimited Series 2, where Minjun Heo won on 11-under-par 205 and Truter finished on nine-under-par 207.
At Blu Label Unlimited Series 3 at Modderfontein, Truter again made his presence felt, opening with a bogey-free 65 to take the early lead before eventually finishing tied fourth.
He also finished tied fourth at Betway Big Easy Tour 2 on 10-under-par 210, further underlining his growing consistency against professional opposition.
The Eye of Africa victory therefore represents the culmination of several strong performances and near misses throughout the season.
Truter, who is South African and competes as an amateur, has established himself as one of the promising young players on the country’s developmental golf circuit. His rise has included appearances in major South African amateur events, as well as regular competition against professionals on the Big Easy and Blu Label Unlimited Tours.
The Eye of Africa Signature Golf Estate provided a demanding setting for the tournament. The par-72 championship course, designed by Greg Norman and Medallist, opened in 2010 and features a combination of bunkers and water hazards capable of punishing errant shots.
The course has also hosted the South African PGA Championship and has a course record of 63, set by Justin Hicks in 2017.
Against that backdrop, Truter’s ability to follow his brilliant second-round 65 with a steady final-round 72 proved decisive.
Van Staden had held the advantage heading into the final round, but Truter refused to allow the opportunity to slip away. Rather than chasing an aggressive score, he managed the final 18 holes effectively and protected his position at the top of the leaderboard.
The result is a significant milestone in Truter’s development. After several strong finishes and flashes of outstanding scoring throughout the season, the South African amateur has now converted his form into his first Blu Label Unlimited title.
