Sekhukhune take aim at history against Pirates
Sekhukhune United will host in-form Orlando Pirates in the DStv Premiership on Saturday, hoping to set a new club record for league wins in a row.
Sekhukhune have gone shooting up the table after four league wins in success, equaling the club record in their relatively short history.
It has put them in contention for a shock second-place finish this season, but if they are to achieve that they will likely have to make it five on the trot against Pirates.
Coach Lehlohonolo Seema has masterminded their purple-patch, securing home wins over Richards Bay (3-1) and Royal AM (1-0), and away successes at Lamontville Golden Arrows (1-0) and Moroka Swallows (4-1).
It has, perhaps, not been the most demanding set of fixtures at Pirates, who currently occupy second place in the league and are three points ahead of Sekhukhune, will be a different proposition altogether.
However, victory will take Sekhukhune above their rivals on goal-difference.
The only other time Sekhukhune won four league games in a row was in January 2023 when they defeated Marumo Gallants (3-2) and Swallows (1-0) at home, and Kaizer Chiefs (1-0) and Stellenbosch FC (1-0) away.
That run was ended by a 2-0 away loss to Mamelodi Sundowns.
Sekhukhune have a single win in seven previous meetings with Pirates, a 2-0 home success in October 2022.
Pirates have won the last three – including last season’s Nedbank Cup final – and have five wins in all against the Limpopo club.
