GFA President Kurt Okraku has said despite the recent poor outings of the Black Stars at tournaments, they are on track to end Ghana’s long trophy drought.

He admitted to the country’s poor showing at the Afcon in Cameroon and attributed it to the squad's lack of quality and the team's mindset.

He is, however, hopeful the current team, which he believes has improved tremendously, will take Ghana to the promised land with time and patience.

He told SuperSport’s Juliet Bawuah that: “The team has not achieved by way of results on the pitch but by way of processes taking us to the promised land, I think we are on track.

“Let’s go back to where we took the team. Let’s look at the intangible assets of the squad. Let’s look at the timing to prepare and get us a winning team.

“Obviously, Afcon in Cameroon was a disaster because we didn’t have the kind of players, the kind of organisation, the kind of mindset that one will need for us to be conquerors of Africa and that was the beginning of the process of building a good team for Ghana.

“Beyond the Afcon, we took all the criticism in good faith which was expected and we started the process of rebuilding the squad, bringing in new personnel on all fronts, so you could see clearly that the team that represented Ghana at the Afcon and the team now looks different and we eventually made it to the World Cup against all odds,” Okraku said.

After a poor campaign in Cameroon, Ghana managed to book a World Cup qualification over Nigeria.

“At the World Cup, we had some interesting performances from the squad, again, we having in mind that the process of building a winning team takes time.

“The team didn’t go beyond the group stage, Ghanaians were unhappy and we appreciate that because we believe that we have to be at the very apex of the game at all times, but that served as a motivation to all of us at the Executive Council to continue with the rebuilding strategy, to continue to find the right people, the right players to ensure that slowly but surely, we have a winning team,” he added.

Ghana last won a major trophy at the Africa Cup of Nations in 1982.
