Mamelodi Sundowns host Durban City in Saturday’s Betway Premiership Matchday nine clash at Royal Bafokeng Stadium, targeting three points to extend their lead at the top of the standings.
Kick-off is at 8:15pm CAT.
CURRENT FORM
Masandawana enter the fixture on the heels of a 1-0 triumph in their Carling Knockout Cup tie on 27 October, stretching their impressive unbeaten streak to 12 matches across all competitions.
Intent on wrestling back the Betway Premiership title from reigning champions Orlando Pirates, Sundowns will be resolute in their quest to secure victory over City and consolidate or extend their one-point cushion at the summit.
Durban City, by contrast, arrive eager to bounce back after a 2-0 setback against Stellenbosch FC in the Carling Knockout Cup on 28 October brought an abrupt halt to their two-match unbeaten spell.
Currently languishing in 10th position in the Betway Premiership, Eric Tinkler’s charges will be desperate to snap a three-game winless league run and potentially propel themselves into the top half of the table.
TEAM NEWS
Mamelodi Sundowns continue to carefully manage their squad selection under head coach Miguel Cardoso, contending with injuries to several key defensive and midfield players, including Ronwen Williams, Khuliso Mudau, Teboho Mokoena, Grant Kekana, Keanu Cupido, and Kegan Johannes.
Meanwhile, Durban City aim to refresh their starting XI following a gruelling schedule coupled with demanding continental travel to Mauritius. Their concerns are further compounded by the fitness of Gastón Sirino, who remains a major doubt after being forced off in the first half against Stellenbosch FC with a knock.
WHAT WAS SAID?
Mamelodi Sundowns Head Coach Miguel Cardoso
"I recognise that it was not a fantastic match [against Marumo Gallants], but it was proof of character that we have to win a match, close it and move forward," Cardoso said.
"It is a very difficult and emotional moment we lived through, but it is an important victory to move forward."
Durban City Head Coach Eric Tinkler
"The quick turnaround after our travel back from Mauritius made things demanding," Tinkler said.
"While we always want to compete in every tournament, exiting this cup (Carling Knockout) might end up being a blessing in disguise for our focus in continental competition and the league."
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Siyanda Ndlovu, Mamelodi Sundowns: The dynamic young attacking midfielder netted his third goal of the campaign against Marumo Gallants, adding to his two assists this season. Ndlovu’s explosive form could prove to be the decisive catalyst as Sundowns seek to claim all three points against City.
Haashim Domingo, Durban City: The seasoned playmaker has been in sublime form, registering three goals in his last four outings. Domingo will be eager to maintain this rich vein of form and inflict damage upon his former employers, while also ending City's winless run in the Betway Premiership.
