Mamelodi Sundowns returned to the top of the Betway Premiership pile this weekend following a clinical 4-1 win over Durban City at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday evening.
While second-placed Orlando Pirates emerged victorious over Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, Sundowns reclaimed their position at the top of the pile owing to goals by Thabang Matuludi (2), Iqraam Rayners and Antonio van Wyk.
Sundowns were proactive in their attacking pursuits early on, with Bathusi Aubaas letting fly from range in the first minute, which was subsequently blocked after being found by Cassius Mailula in an inviting position.
The Brazilians continued to create chances during the early stages of the first half, as seen with chances by Malibongwe Khoza, Tashreeq Matthews and Mailula, who failed to find the back of the net.
While Durban City offered little threat going forward, Downs opened the scoring in the 34th minute as Matuludi etched his name on the scoresheet. Following a period of sustained possession, Downs were awarded a corner which was swung in by Nuno Santos and capped off by Matuludi with a header from the right side of the box.
Downs continued to threaten the Durban City backline during the early stages of the second half, with Santos and Tashreeq Matthews having a go from range which failed to hit the mark.
The Tshwane giants doubled their advantage shortly after the 66th minute mark, with Matuludi making the difference once more. With Aubrey Modiba on the flank, the experienced defender whipped a cross into the area, which was met by Matuludi with a header toward the right bottom corner.
Downs continued to threaten as the clock ticked down at Loftus Versfeld, while Durban City battled to make the most of rare chances throughout the second half.
With momentum on their side, Rayners added Sundowns' third goal in the 79th minute following a well-worked move toward the Durban City box. With Siyanda Ndlovu on hand with a cross, Rayners managed to find the back of the net with an instinctive finish from the centre of the goal.
Durban City grabbed a consolation effort four minutes from time as Jean Lwamba was on hand to convert a left-footed shot from the middle of the goal after a swift break.
Sundowns added their fourth goal deep into stoppage time as second-half substitute van Wyk joined the action. Following a fast break, Van Wyk capped off a rapid attacking move with a left-footed finish inside the 18-yard-area after being assisted by Arthur Sales.
