Round 26 of the Motsepe Foundation Championship saw Polokwane City claim top spot on the back of a hard-fought away win over NB La Masia, combined with Cape Town Spurs defeating Casric Stars.
All the action in the race to finish top of the log arrived on Friday afternoon, with Spurs knocking Casric (who had put together a 16-game unbeaten run) off the top of the table thanks to a 2-0 triumph at Athlone Stadium in which Therlo Moosa and Boitumelo Radiopane netted the goals.
At the same time, Polokwane claimed a come-from-behind 2-1 triumph over La Masia at Tsakane Stadium (Fuad Johnson opened the scoring for the hosts, before Rise and Shine replied via Lebohang Nkaki and Hlayisi Chauke), while Platinum City Rovers and Baroka FC drew 1-1 at Olen Park (with respective goals from Sekela Sithole and Olaleng Shaku).
Friday’s results left Polokwane, Spurs and Stars all level on 50 points at the top of the log, with respective goal differences of +15, +13 and +11.
Saturday produced three draws, with Pretoria University and JDR Stars playing out a goalless stalemate at Tuks Stadium; Venda Football Academy and Hungry Lions shared the spoils 1-1 in Thohoyandou; and All Stars and Magesi FC played out a 2-2 thriller at Tsakane Stadium in which Kagiso Selemela scored a brace for the visitors.
Sunday saw Black Leopards lift themselves off the foot of the table with a 2-1 home win over provincial rivals Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (who dropped to last spot, while Lidoda Duvha are six points from safety) on the back of goals from Tsepo Matsimbi and Douglas Mapfumo while Uthongathi FC and Pretoria Callies drew 1-1 at the Princess Magogo Stadium.
The MFC will return with a full round of eight matches on the weekend of 21-23 April, headlined by a Limpopo derby between JDR Stars and Polokwane City.
