Hungry Lions are the leaders of the Motsepe Foundation Championship after the completion of the second round of the 2022-23 season this weekend.

The Northern Cape side trumped Pretoria Callies to be the only side with a 100 per cent record and a full haul of six points, while Platinum City Rovers and Black Leopards are at the opposite end of the scale as both have suffered back-to-back defeats to open the new campaign.

The round opened on Friday at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium with Cape Town Spurs claiming a 2-1 away win over Magesi FC.

The Urban Warriors recovered from Vuyisile Wana’s opening penalty to take all three points via second-half strikes from Ashley Cupido and Therlo Moosa.

Saturday saw goalless stalemates for Baroka FC at home to All Stars, as well as Casric Stars visiting JDS Stars in Soshanguve, while Hungry Lions rose to the top of the log with a hard-fought 1-0 win away to Pretoria Callies at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, with Muzomuhle Khanyi striking just before the break.

Venda FC edged Platinum City Rovers 1-0 at Thohoyandou Stadium via Thanzi Mbedzi’s goal, and Polokwane City put in the performance of the weekend to crush provincial rivals Black Leopards 3-0 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

In Sunday’s matches, Uthongathi FC and NB La Masia could have joined Hungry Lions on six points, but neither managed victory: the former were held 0-0 by Pretoria University at Princess Magogo Stadium, while the latter succumbed 2-0 away to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila at the Thohoyandou Stadium, where the goals were netted by Mthokozise Nene and Moeketsi Sekola.

The MFC will continue this coming midweek with a full round of fixtures on Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 September, headlined by a regional derby between Polokwane City and Venda FC.
