Head-to-head: Maritzburg United vs Kaizer Chiefs

This is the seventh cup game between the sides, they previously met in the Telkom Knockout Cup in 2005-06 (Coca Cola Cup), 2014-15, 2016-17 and 2019-20 as well as the MTN 8 in 2015-16 and 2020-21.

Of their previous games Chiefs won five in the 2005-06 (Coca Cola Cup), 2014-15 and 2016-17 Telkom Knockout Cup as well as the MTN 8 in 2015-16 and 2020-21, while Maritzburg won a Telkom Knockout Cup Semi-final encounter 2-1 between the sides in 2019-20.

The only previous cup clash between the sides to be decided on penalties was their 2016-17 TKO Last 16 encounter which ended 0-0, before Chiefs won on spot kicks.

While they have met in the other two domestic cup competitions this is their first clash in the Nedbank Cup, with this meeting it completes a set of clashes in all three domestic cup competitions.

No team winning a cup game between these sides has ever gone onto win the title previously.

Current Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane did not feature when Chiefs defeated Maritzburg United in the 2005-06 Coca Cola Cup first round a game Amakhosi won 2-1, on the 22nd October 2005 at Olympia Park in Rustenburg. That was the first cup clash between the sides, Zwane did play the next game in the tournament against Jomo Cosmos which saw the then defending champions Chiefs lose and be eliminated from.

The highest scoring cup game between the teams was a 2015-16 MTN 8 Quarterfinal game which produced eight goals and saw Chiefs win 5-3 after extra time.

The teams have already met this season with Chiefs winning a league game 3-0 at home on the 9th August, Chiefs have won the last three matches between the teams all league encounters while scoring six goals and not conceding any.

In the last six games between the teams in all competitions, Chiefs have four won wins including an MTN 8 clash in October 2020 which they won 2-1, while Maritzburg have one win a league game which they won at Soccer City on the 9th January 2021 2-0. One other game on the 10th March 2021 ended 1-1.

MARITZBURG UNITED

Maritzburg have never previously won a Nedbank Cup title but have made it to the final in 2018, where they lost to Free State Stars.

As a top flight club Maritzburg United are participating in the Nedbank Cup for the 18th time their record in the round of 32 since 2005-06 including wins and losses on penalties reads P17 W9 L8.

In the round of 32 Maritzburg United have had six games go to extra time, they defeated Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 in 2011-12, in 2013-14 they defeated Cape Town City of the lower divisions 2-1 and in 2017-18 they overcame Swallows 3-1.

Their last two round of 32 games to go two extra time both ended 2-2 in 2017-18 and 2018-19 they defeated Witbank Spurs on penalties eventually, while in 2019-20 they lost in the shoot-out to Stellenbosch. While in 2012-13 they ended 0-0 with University of Pretoria and went down on penalties, this is the only occasion a round of 32 match involving Maritzburg ended 0-0.

Last season Maritzburg were defeated 1-0 at home in the round of 32 against SuperSport United. Maritzburg have begun a Nedbank Cup at home in the round of 32 ten times previously, this is the third successive season that they start of at home.

Maritzburg’s round of 32 record when starting at home reads P10 W6 L4.

KAIZER CHIEFS

Kaizer Chiefs are bidding to reach a 20th Nedbank Cup Title. They are the most successful team in Nedbank Cup history they have won 13 titles and have been runners up a further six times.

Amakhosi last appeared in the Nedbank Cup Final in the 2018-19 season, when they lost to then second tier side TS Galaxy 1-0.

Chiefs last won the Nedbank Cup in 2012-13 when defeating SuperSport United 1-0 in the final. They won the inaugural Nedbank Cup tournament back in 1971 when it was still known as the Life Challenge Cup defeating Orlando Pirates 2-1 in a replayed final after the first game ended 2-2.

The Glamour Boys have won the Nedbank Cup in 1971, 1972, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1987, 1992, 2000, 2006 and 2013. They have been Nedbank Cup runners up in 1975, 1978, 1988, 1993, 1991 and 2019.

Chiefs begin their 26th PSL era Nedbank Cup campaign. Since 1996-97 Chiefs have reached the final of the Nedbank Cup five times, winning in 2000, 2006 and 2013, they were runners up in 1999 and 2019.

Chiefs record including wins and losses on penalties since 1996-97 in the Nedbank Cup round of 32 their record reads W21 L4.

Kaizer Chiefs have had just one Nedbank Cup game in the round of 32 since 1996-97 go to a penalty shoot-out, this was in the 2006-07 campaign when they ended 0-0 Golden Arrows and lost in the shoot-out. They were the defending champions of the tournament.

Since 1996-97 Chiefs have lost three other round of 32 games all in open play they have been eliminated in the last two Nedbank Cup campaigns in the opening round, losing in 2020-21 to Richards Bay and TS Galaxy last season 1-0. While they lost in 2015-16 2-0 away to Orlando Pirates.

Until their loss to Arrows on penalties in 2006-07 Chiefs had won 9 successive Nedbank Cup round of 32 matches in open play.

In round of 32 games in the PSL Era Chiefs have won 8 games by three goals or more and have scored at least three goals in at least 13 of these games.

Chiefs are looking to go beyond the round of 32 for the first time since the 2019-20 season when they defeated Real Kings at this stage.

Chiefs 21 PSL era Nedbank Cup round of 32 victories have all been won in open play, with their biggest win coming against Nelspruit City Black Swallows in 1998-99 an 8-0 triumph. Coach Arthur Zwane was a winner as a player in this competition winning the title with Amakhosi in 2005-06.

Amakhosi start a Nedbank Cup campaign against top-flight opponents since 1996-97 for an 11th time, when playing a round of 32 game against a DStv Premiership side since 1996-97 Chiefs have managed to seven games. They have lost three times against Arrows in 2006-07, Pirates in 2015-16 and TS Galaxy last season.
