For the past eight days, South African football fans have witnessed the return of the action of the highly anticipated Nedbank Cup.

The round-of-32 fixtures took place across the country, with spectators hoping to see their teams go through to the round of 16.

With the 16 teams all confirmed, tournament sponsors Nedbank and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) hosted the round-of-16 draw on Wednesday in Johannesburg.

During the round-of-32 matches the Nedbank Cup once again lived up to the 'David v Goliath' tag when debutants Dondol Stars caused the tournament’s first major upset as they knocked out three-time winners, SuperSport United.

True to their slogan 'Chaba Re Fete', which means 'move over, we are passing', the Pretoria outfit came from behind to beat Gavin Hunt’s men 2-1 and book their spot in the round of 16.

They are joined by Cape Town Spurs, Venda Football Academy, Mpheni Home Defenders, Casric Stars and Chippa United, who make up a record of six lower-division sides who have progressed to the last-16 stage.

'The exhilarating round-of-32 fixtures have really set the tone of what is to be expected for the rest of the tournament and we cannot wait to see it all unfold during the round-of-16 fixtures.

"As proud sponsors, we aim to continually support the development of South African football by providing lower-level clubs an opportunity to showcase their talent in competing with professional clubs to offer fans phenomenal entertainment," said Buli Ndlovu, Executive Head of Marketing for Nedbank Retail and Business Banking.

With 16 teams remaining in the 16th edition of the tournament, the Nedbank Cup continues to bring football lovers the knockout football excitement they have become accustomed to.

The dates and venues for the round of 16 will be confirmed by the PSL. Nedbank will soon also be launching exciting initiatives and activities as part of its Nedbank Cup 2023 season campaign.
