As a relatively unknown club in South African football, Liver Brothers will be looking to cause one of the biggest upsets in the local game when they take on Sekhukhune United in the Nedbank Cup at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Kick-off is at 7:30pm (SA, GMT+2)
In what is billing up to be a ‘David v Goliath’ clash in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32, Babina Noko will welcome Liver Brothers to Polokwane this week.
Making their way from Mpumalanga, Liver Brothers currently ply their trade in the SAB League, after gaining promotion to South Africa's fourth division last year.
Liver Brothers are the only squad from SA’s fourth tier to have qualified for the Nedbank Cup Round of 32, as coach Magic Nyalungu vows to cause an upset against Sekhukhune United.
Speaking ahead of the tie, ’The Magician’ as he is fondly known, mentioned that Liver Brothers are soaking in the opportunity of playing against Sekhukhune United and that they won’t be afraid of taking the game to the opposition.
“We are here in Polokwane, looking forward to tomorrow’s game,” Nyalungu said.
“So excited about it, together with the boys. The mood is out of this world, everybody is looking forward to the game. After all, what is there not to motivate the players, with such facilities that we have here.
“I believe we have what it takes to create one of the biggest upsets in South African football, since this is one cup that produced some of the biggest upsets when it comes to underdogs and big dogs.”
As for Sekhukhune, they have been on the up since the arrival of coach Brandon Truter. Before his arrival, Babina Noko were lingering in the bottom half of the DStv Premiership table.
In going on a run of four wins on the trot, Sekhukhune found themselves as high as fourth on the league’s log, before slumping to two consecutive defeats.
Sekhukhune go into the tie on the back of losses against Mamelodi Sundowns and Marumo Gallants. With their winning form coming to an abrupt end in the league, Truter mentioned that the Nedbank Cup tie provides the club an opportunity to get back to winning ways, while also aiming to do well in the popular tournament.
“When I came to the club, the objective was clear, we want to do well in this competition,” Truter said.
“It also provides us with the opportunity to get back to winning ways, there will be a winner at the end of the game.
“We are not taking our opponents lightly, we aim to win it and we’ll field the best possible eleven to go out and do the job.
“We weren't happy with our performance in the last game, we will aim to rectify it in this game. Cup competition is always tricky whether you are playing in a lower division but we’ll put our best foot forward and our best eleven available. "
