Who has won the Nedbank Cup before?
There are 16 teams remaining in the Nedbank Cup this season, but only six have lifted the trophy in this competition before, opening up the potential for a new champion in 2023.
Here is the list of those teams still alive this season that have won in the past.
CAPE TOWN SPURS
Trophy wins (2): 1995, 2007
Spurs won their maiden title when they completed a league and cup double by beating second-tier Pretoria City in the 1995 final, their current coach Shaun Bartlett scoring a late winner in that game.
Their amalgamation with seven Stars shortly afterwards meant they played under the banner of Ajax Cape Town and they repeated the title win with another victory in 2007. This time they beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 in the final.
They were also on the losing side in the deciders in 2003 and 2015.
KAIZER CHIEFS
Trophy wins (13): 1971, 1972, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1987, 1992, 2000, 2006, 2013
The most successful side in the history of the competition as a whole, Chiefs have won the Nedbank Cup only once since 2008, but have 13 triumphed in South Africa’s coveted FA Cup overall.
That included some early dominance when they won the first two titles on over, beating Orlando Pirates (1971) and AmaZulu (1972). They also won back-to-back titles in 1976 and 1977, beating Pirates in the final both times.
They claimed a fifth title in the decade with a 1979 triumph, and claimed another four in the 1980s as they remained the premier club side in the country and the force to beat.
Since then the pickings have been slimmer. They were successful in 1992 with a 2-1 victory over Jomo Cosmos, and won again in 2000 by beating Mamelodi Sundowns in the decider.
They beat Pirates on penalties in 2006 before their 2013 success, when they edged SuperSport United 1-0 to lift the trophy.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
Trophy wins (5): 1986, 1998, 2008, 2015, 2020, 2022
[embed:youtube:video:id=Wjei8sFKGo0]Sundowns have enjoyed huge trophy success in their history, but up until recently found the Nedbank Cup a tougher proposition than most knockout prizes.
That has changed with two wins in the last three years – they defeated Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 in the 2020 final and Marumo Gallants 2-1 last season.
Those successes followed Nedbank Cup wins in 2008, when they beat second-tier Mpumalanga Black Aces 1-0 in the final, and over Ajax Cape Town on penalties after a 0-0 draw in Nelson Mandela Bay in 2015,
Their first title came in 1986 when they defeated Jomo Cosmos 1-0 after extra-time, and it would be 12 years before they lifted the trophy again with a penalty shoot-out win over Orlando Pirates after their decider went to a replay and both games finished 1-1.
MARUMO GALLANTS
Trophy wins (1): 2021
The 2021 champions went under the name TTM when they lifted the Nedbank Cup that season, beating Chippa United 1-0 in the final at the Free State Stadium.
They were a surprise package in the competition, with their run to the trophy in contrast to some poor league form, but their penalty shoot-out win over Sundowns in the semifinals remains ones of the great Nedbank Cup contests.
They reached the final again last season but this time lost 2-1 to Sundowns, though they conceded the losing goal in the 120th minute of extra-time and were agonisingly close to taking the final to the lottery of penalties.
ORLANDO PIRATES
Trophy wins (8): 1973, 1974, 1975, 1980, 1988, 1996, 2011, 2014
Orlando Pirates have been the second most successful side ever in the Nedbank Cup competition, but have not lifted the trophy since 2014.
They have suffered two final defeats since then, going down to SuperSport United in both 2016 and 2017, and in total have won eight of their 17 final appearances.
Only Kaizer Chiefs (13 wins from 19 finals) have lifted the trophy more times, or been to more deciders, than their great Soweto rivals.
Pirates are the only club to win the trophy three years in a row after a hat-trick of successes between 1973-75. That included back-to-back wins over Zulu Royals, who by the next year had changed their name to AmaZulu, and finally Kaizer Chiefs.
They beat Moroka Swallows in 1980, Chiefs after a replay in 1988 and Jomo Cosmos in 1996.
Then followed a 15-year barren run before they lifted the Nedbank Cup in 2011, beating Black Leopards in the final, and followed that up with a 2014 victory over BidVest Wits.
TS GALAXY
Trophy wins (1): 2019
Galaxy famously lifted the Nedbank Cup in 2019 as they beat Kaizer Chiefs in the final, and in doing so became the first second-tier side ever to claim the silverware.
Coach Dan Malesela’s side edged the AmaKhosi thanks to a late penalty from Zakhele Lepasa, who had been the stars of The Rockets’ run to the decider.
Coincidentally, Galaxy met Chiefs again in the Last 32 last year and triumphed 1-0 once more to book a second round place.
They have since been elevated to the topflight after owner Tim Sukazi purchased the status of Highlands Park ahead of the 2020/21 season.
