Nyame sends Royal AM to Last 16
Royal AM defeated Cape Town City 4-3 on penalties following a 0-0 draw in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 match at the DHL Stadium on Sunday evening.
Therefore, Thwihli Thwahla progressed to the Last 16 and they are scheduled next to face SuperSport United in a DStv Premiership match at home on 18 February.
The Citizens, meanwhile, bowed out of the tournament and they will be keen to return to winning ways when they face Swallows FC at home in a league game on 19 February.
The Citizens started the match brightly and they nearly grabbed an early goal through Juan Zapata whose effort was well-saved by goalkeeper Hugo Nyame just a minute into the game.
Thwihli Thwahla grew gradually into the game and they came very close to scoring when Tebogo Potsane hit the post with a left-footed shot in the 25th minute.
Royal were the better team after the restart and Shadrack Kobedi's forced goalkeeper Bongani Mpandle into a fantastic one-handed save just two minutes into the second half.
However, City finished the second half the stronger of the two teams with the last chance of the game falling for Taahir Goedeman, whose attempt was well saved by Nyame in stoppage time.
Ultimately, the match ended in a 0-0 draw in regulation time and the encounter went straight into extra-time with a spot in the Round of 16 at stake.
City created the better chances in extra-time, but they were wasteful as Zapata and Khanyisa Mayo hit the woodwork in the 97th minute and 118th minute respectively with Royal under siege.
Ultimately, the game ended in a 0-0 draw and a penalty shootout followed. Royal went on to win 4-3 on penalties after Nyame denied Lorenzo Gordinho and Mayo during the penalty shootout.
