The Betway Premiership’s CAF Club representatives will get back to league action with four key clashes across South Africa on the evening of Tuesday 13 October.
With the league dormant since September 20 due to the international break and this past Saturday’s MTN8 final, Durban City, Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates will feature in domestic midweek action before their African club commitments kick in over the coming weekend.
Champions League representatives Sundowns and Pirates will be away to Richards Bay (at the Princess Magogo Stadium) and at home to TS Galaxy (at the Orlando Stadium) respectively.
The Brazilians and Buccaneers met in the final of the MTN8 this past weekend, with the former team emerging 2-0 winners to secure the first piece of domestic silverware on offer in the 2026/27 season.
“It is fantastic that we arrive in October and we now have two trophies [Sundowns also won the African-Asian Pacific Cup]. Now we have to keep humble and work hard, we have achieved nothing yet,” said coach Miguel Cardoso.
Sundowns enjoy a one-point lead over Pirates at the top of the log (though the Soweto giants have played one match less), and both teams will be confident of adding three points each to that equation, as the title race continues to simmer early in the season.
Confederation Cup teams Durban City and Chiefs will be at home to AmaZulu FC (at the Chatsworth Stadium) and Stellenbosch FC (at FNB Stadium) respectively.
City’s derby against Usuthu (who have impressed this season and sit in third place) sees them chasing a first league win since late August, as they embark on a new era under coach Eric Tinkler.
“I’m excited to be part of what is being built here at Durban City FC,” said the former Bafana Bafana midfielder.
“The club is very ambitious, they have made positive strides in a short space of time, competing in the CAF Confederation Cup already, and that made my decision easy.”
Chiefs, as ever, will be expected to make their way to victory, but Stellies and coach Gavin Hunt have proven tricky opponents for the Amakhosi in the past.
“After watching a lot of the games, I know we need to be better at both ends of the pitch. Where we are right now, we need to defend better; it’s basic,” said Hunt.
He added, “It sounds simple, but it’s something we must improve quickly because we’ve got tough games coming up.”
