Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine can set a new record for the most clean sheets in a Premier Soccer League season if he keeps Magesi from scoring when they meet the title challengers in the Betway Premiership in Polokwane on Saturday.
Chaine kept his 18th clean sheet of the league season against Stellenbosch on Tuesday, establishing a new club record by beating the mark set by Moeneeb Josephs in 2009/10.
The 29-year-old Chaine also equalled the PSL record of 18 clean sheets that Sundowns’ Ronwen Williams managed in 18 in the 2022/23 season.
Chaine has three more matches to break the record and go on to set an imposing target.
He has been ever-present for Pirates this season, beaten just 12 times in 27 games this league campaign.
This season, only Richards Bay and Marumo Gallants have managed to score more than one goal against Pirates in a game.
“He is an important player for us, and I'm happy for him that he broke the record,” said coach Abdeslam Ouaadou after Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Stellenbosch at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.
“I hope definitely that Hugo Broos has seen his performances, and really, really, I hope that he will be part of the national team at the World Cup.
“He deserves it, and he's working hard for that opportunity as well,” added Ouaddou.
