This season's DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) title race is finely poised and set for a thrilling conclusion.
Orlando Pirates, without a DDC league title since the inception of the tournament in 2014, have 10 games to go and hold a three-point lead over Mamelodi Sundowns, who have won the league once (in 2017) since it was established.
In a thrilling contest at the top of the table, Pirates currently lead the pack with 48 points amassed over 20 matches, while Sundowns trail closely behind with 45 points, albeit having played one match more than the Buccaneers.
This isn’t the first time Pirates have shown promising signs of capturing the coveted DDC title, only to falter at crucial moments. In the 2021-22 season, they held the top spot after matchday 23, yet ultimately finished in a disappointing third place, overshadowed by SuperSport United and the eventual champions, Stellenbosch FC.
The following season, 2022-23, saw Pirates as strong favourites once again. However, their inability to maintain focus at pivotal points, particularly around matchday 26, led them to relinquish the title, finishing second to SuperSport, who emerged as champions.
As the stakes rise, the question looms: can Pirates finally redirect their fortunes and secure their first-ever Diski Challenge title?
Pirates' head coach, Roscoe Krieling, who previously served as Thabo September’s assistant at SuperSport during their DDC triumph in 2022-23, acknowledged the weight of expectation.
“There’s pressure on every team that is playing in the DDC. We will see when we have four to three games remaining. The main thing for us is to get maximum points,” Krieling stated.
Realistically, it appears to be a two-horse race between Pirates and Sundowns. Siwelele, sitting in third with 42 points, still harbours a slim chance, but it would require a rare slip-up from both Sundowns and Pirates to alter the landscape of this fiercely contested season.
