Milford FC retained their three-point lead at the top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) following Matchday 18 fixtures played across South Africa this weekend.
Milford were in action on Sunday afternoon, defeating Highbury FC 1-0 at the uMhlathuze Stadium – a third successive win in the second-tier league.
Cape Town City also featured strongly on Sunday, keeping up their excellent form with a 4-1 thumping of Midlands Wanderers at the Athlone Stadium. Inspired by a hat-trick from Therlo Moosa, the Citizens have won six of their last seven MFC matches, and gone nine unbeaten in the division, pushing them to third place on the log – four points off the pace of Milford.
Sunday’s final match saw a 1-1 draw between Venda FC and Lerumo Lions, with the latter club scoring a penalty via Mfanafuthi Mlotshwa deep in injury time to cancel out Tshepo Mofokeng’s opener.
Saturday was headlined by a 2-1 win for Kruger United over Upington City, with Celimpilo Ngema and Bright Ndlovu taking the Looters to second place on the log – level on points with Milford FC at the time, and three behind by the end of the round.
Kruger took full advantage of a 2-2 draw for Casric Stars, who needed a brace of goals from Simon Moukete to take a point from their clash away to Hungry Lions.
Leicesterford City secured a hard-earned 2-1 home win over the University of Pretoria, thanks to goals from Sipho Zwane and Sphamandla Mdunge, and Baroka FC edged The Bees 1-0 on the back of Karabo Seroto’s first goal for Bakgaga – boosting their survival hopes.
Black Leopards, however, remain rooted to the bottom of the log after a 2-0 loss away to Gomora United, for whom Kgotso Mohloane netted a brace.
The MFC will resume with Matchday 19 on the weekend of 27 February to 1 March.
