Defending Betway Premiership champions Orlando Pirates made it a three-way tie with Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu FC at the top of the log after a weekend of thrilling action in South Africa’s premier division.
The Buccaneers joined the Amakhosi and Usuthu on seven points – and claimed top spot thanks to a superior goal difference – after they crushed hosts Chippa United 3-0 at the Kings Park Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The first half ended goalless, as Pirates looked set to continue their somewhat sluggish start to the season, but strikes from Ghampani Lungu and Lebone Seema after the hour mark sparked them to life, and Daniel Msendami added a third late on as the reigning league champions hit top gear for the first time in 2026/27.
The headline match of the weekend was a 1-1 draw between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns at a sold-out FNB Stadium on Saturday, with the Amakhosi claiming the lead via Langelihle Phili’s first goal for the club, before the Brazilians struck back via Cassius Mailula – with the latter player quickly becoming a ‘super sub’ for the 15-time PSL champions.
The weekend’s action got underway on Friday evening at the Athlone Stadium, with Stellenbosch FC recording a 3-1 triumph over Marumo Gallants – featuring a hat-trick from youngster Quwan Plaatjies.
Saturday, aside from the Chiefs-Sundowns match, also featured a 2-0 win for AmaZulu FC over Siwelele FC at the Kings Park Stadium (goals from Mondlie Mbanjwa and Thandolwenkois Ngwenya); Sekhukhune United outclassed Polokwane City 2-0 in their Limpopo derby (goals from Tshepo Mokoane and Mpho Rammala); the KwaZulu-Natal derby between Durban City and Richards Bay ended 1-1 (Nqaba Xulu’s opener was cancelled out by an own goal from Thembela Sikhakhane); and the all-rookie clash between Milford FC and Kruger United brought a 2-1 victory for the former at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium.
The Stallions came from being both 0-1 and a man down to secure victory, with the three points sealed by an early goal-of-the-season contender from Thabana Mabena.
The weekend’s action was completed on Sunday evening at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium, where TS Galaxy and Golden Arrows remained winless in the league by playing out a 0-0 draw.
The Premiership continues with a catch-up match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Marumo Gallants on Wednesday 19 August, before the next full round the following midweek of 25-26 August.
